  Too loud for conversation, table was uncomfortable for 5 people (not a large group really). Food came late, one salmon dish served in pyrex glass was cold at the bottom while the top was warm (i.e. reheated, but not fully). Dishes were all tiny, tiny portions - we were not satisfied.
  
  Saw another reviewer on here comment that families were not welcome, and I got the same vibe although we were all adults, no children.
  
  Came with the expectation of modernized Quebecois dishes, did not meet expectations. Decor was one redeeming point.

  I was looking for a bar with good tunes and found it. Everything from classic to indie rock. A great place for Anglophones looking to practice their French. The menu is all in French and I didn't try to talk in English but everyone seemed to speak it and not be at all opposed to it. I looked all over Google maps and couldn't find anything similar.

  They're really trying: the staff are friendly, the location is great (and anything interesting on the tourist-trap row of Rue St Jean is welcome), the decor is amusing, and the cocktails (we had the Anatole and the Fleurette) are creative and well-made. But you can't call yourself a good restaurant without serving good food, and "Grandma Claire's Meat Pie," I'm sorry to say, was one of the five worst dishes I've ever eaten in a restaurant. The pastry crust on top was dense and use-a-knife tough; the dough was flavorless and had seemingly been kneaded like it was bread dough, not pie crust. The meat filling beneath was very dry and very bland. The pie is served with three unmemorable pickle relishes, which are, however, essential, because they're the only thing that gave the dish any flavor or enough moisture to eat. Maybe I got this pie on a bad night, and maybe there are better things on the menu. I sure hope so, because their hearts are in the right place at Batinse, but after my encounter with Grandma Claire I won't be giving them a second chance.
